Xi'an----the
Starting Point of the Silk Road
Xi'an has been a famous historical
and cultural city of China for more than 3,100 years. Ever
since 1126 B.C., it had served as the capital city for more
than a dozen dynasties, among China's 7 ancient capitals and
rivaling such ancient capitals as Rome, Athens and Cairo in
the world. In the Tang Dynasty (618-917), the most prosperous
dynasty in Chinese history, Chang'an used to be the biggest
metropolis in the world.
Urumqi
The capital of the Xinjiang
Uygur Autonomous Region, Urumqi has an urban population of
about 1.09 million, which comprises 13 ethnic groups, including
Uygurs, Kazaks, Huis, Hans, Mongolians, Kirgizs, Tatars, Tajiks,
Xibes, Uzbeks, Manchus, Daurs, and Russians.
The Heavenly Lake
The Heavenly Lake, also called
Yaochi (Jade Lake), locates on the northern slope of Mt. Tianshan,
and covers an area of 4.9 square kilometers with a depth of
90 meters and an altitude of 1,980 meters in the midst of
high mountains. The melted glaciers and snow provide it with
pure, jade-blue water.
