Tourist Attractions:
The Tibet Autonomous Region
is located on the Qinghai - Tibet Plateau at the southwestern
most tip of China. Some 4,000 meters above sea level, Tibet
is known as the Roof of the World. There are over 50 peaks
more than 7,000 meters above sea level. Covering an area of
1.2 million square kilometers, Tibet had a population of more
than 2.3 million.
In the mid-13th century,
Tibet became an administrative region in the Yuan Dynasty
(1271 - 1368). In the Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644), the central
government administrated Tibet by granting titles to the administrative
and religious heads. In the Qing Dynasty (1644 - 1911), rulers
conferred titles upon each reincarnation of the Dalai Lama
and the Panchen Erdeni, the toppest living Buddha in Tibet.
Tibet is charming for its
beautiful and spectacular landscape, the unique folklore,
and the brilliant culture, which have drawn numerous visitors
from around the world.
Tibetan Religion
Buddhism was introduced
into Tibet in the 7th century. After many trials and tribulations,
it was gradually transformed into a local religion - Lamaism,
and a theocracy came into being which lasted until the 1950s.
For more than a millennium, thousands of monasteries and temples
sprang up in Tibet. Today, the Buddhist faith remains the
spiritual prop of most Tibetans.
Everywhere in
Tibet, one can see the glittering golden roofs of monasteries.
These monasteries contain numerous statues of Buddha and the
guardian deities. Just as anyone traveling to Lhasa can see
the Potala Palace, with its golden roofs, and monasteries
in any town in Tibet, are always the most illustrious architectures
and the place's hallmark. They are the embodiment of Tibet's
architectural, painting, and sculptural arts.
Nagari
Known as the Roof
on the Roof of the World, Nagari, 4,500 meters above sea level,
is located in the northwestern part of Tibet. It is dotted
with lakes, and is the paradise for wild animals, such as
yaks, Tibetan antelopes and wild donkeys.
The Great Canyon
Located on a bend
on the lower reaches of the Yarlung Zangbo River, it winds
with Mt. Namjagbarwa, and stretches 196.3 kilometers, at an
average depth of 5,000 meters. It is the longest and deepest
canyon in the world.
Lake Namco
Held sacred by
the Tibetan people, Lake Namco is located in Nagqu. Some 70
by 30 kilometers in area, and 4,718 meters above sea level,
it is like a crystal gem inlaid on the vast Qiangtang Plain.
Wild animals, such as yaks and bharals, can often be found
in this area.
