Tourist Attractions:
Yungang Grottoes
As one of China's four
most famous ancient grottoes housing Buddhist sculptures
and carvings, the Yungang Grottoes are located at the
southern foot of Wuzhou Mountain 10 km west of Datong
City. The first grottoes were constructed in 453. Still
extant today are 53 caves, which house over 51,000 stone
carvings. The largest Buddhist statue is 17 meters tall
and the smallest, only a few centimeters.
Yingxian wooden Pagoda
Built in 1056, the world's
extant oldest and tallest wooden Buddhist pagoda is located
in Yingxian County 70 km south of Datong City. The pagoda
is 66.6 meters in height, 30 meters in diameter and 300
tons in weight. At least 3,500 cubic meters of wood were
used to build it.
Mt. Wutai
Mt. Wutai
has been venerated by Buddhist as one of China's four
scared sites since ancient times. Situated 230 km from
Taiyuan City, it consists of five towering peaks.
Jinci Temple
Located 25
km southwest of Taiyuan City, Jinci temple is a famous
Chinese architectural masterpiece of horticuture with
a history of over 1,400 years. Of all the 100 and more
buildings, the Hall of Holy Mother, the Double Wooden
Bridge of the Song Dynasty, and Xiandian Hall of the Jin
Dynasty occupy an important place in the history of ancient
architecture.
Midair Temple in Mt.
Hengshan
Built in the
later period of the northern Wei Dynasty (386-534) and
located in the canyon at the foot of Hengshan Mountain,
the temple hung in midair is a rare piece of architecture
of its kind. The existing 40 halls are all wooden structured.
