Ancient Xi'an
Capital of Shaanxi Province
Famous Archaeological Findings
City Flower: Pomegranate
Area: 2,295 sq km
Population: 6.48 million
Of all the cities on the Golden Route, Xi'an most vividly illustrates
the continuity of China's long civilization. Once the largest city
in the world and capital for 11 dynasties, Xi'an is a favorite destination
for travelers to China, due, in no small part, to the 1974 discovery
of 6,000 life-sized terracotta soldiers warriors and horses which
had been created over 2,200 years ago to guard the tomb of the first
emperor Qin Shihuang of the Qin Dynasty. The beginnings of Xi'an
are at Banpo, where the remains of a Neolithic village dating back
some 8,000 years, are now on display. Other superb sights to see
include the Big and Little Wild Goose pagodas, the Bell and Drum
towers, the City Wall and the impressive Great Mosque.
